What do Instagram’s rules require?
Three things, from Instagram’s own promotion guidelines: official rules with any eligibility limits, an acknowledgment that the promotion is not sponsored or administered by Instagram, and no asking people to tag themselves in photos they are not in. The document is a page long; read it once and reuse your wording.
Beyond the platform, consumer rules in most markets ask that a free prize is actually free and that the terms are visible before entry. None of this needs a lawyer for a t-shirt giveaway; all of it needs a paragraph in the caption you can point at later.
Which entry mechanic should you pick?
“Like and comment” fills a comment section and is the easiest to collect. “Tag a friend” spreads further but attracts tag chains and needs a bonus-entry rule you are willing to count. “Follow to enter” grows the number that giveaway-hunters inflate — expect a share of them to leave when the prize is announced.
Story shares reach non-followers but are hard to collect honestly, because you only see shares from public accounts. Whatever you choose, choose it for collectability: an entry you cannot list is an entrant you will silently exclude, and that is the unfairness no drawing method repairs.
How long should it run, and when do you post?
Three to seven days sits in the useful range: long enough for your posting rhythm to surface it twice, short enough that the first entrants still remember it when you announce. Publish the close as a time, not a day — “Friday 18:00” ends the argument that “Friday” starts.
Remind once mid-run and once near the close, in stories, where repetition is expected. Plan the announcement post when you plan the giveaway: “we drew a winner”, with a visible draw in it, is a better post than a name in a caption.
How do you draw and announce the winner?
Collect the qualifying entrants after the deadline, put them on a wheel with bonus entries as weights, and draw once — recorded for a reel or story, or in a live session your followers can open and watch land. The Instagram giveaway picker opens with a wheel set up for exactly this, weighted entries included.
Announce in the feed and in a story, name the winner the way they entered, include the draw id from the log, and contact the winner exactly once from your real account. Every further step happens in that one thread — which is what makes the impostors visible.
What about the fake-winner scams?
Within hours of a public giveaway, lookalike accounts start messaging entrants that they have won and need to confirm shipping with a card. It is the most common harm attached to Instagram giveaways, it targets your audience rather than you, and your announcement is the place to defuse it.
Say it in the rules and again in the announcement: winners are contacted once, from this account, and never asked for payment, card details or a release fee. One sentence costs nothing, and it is the difference between your giveaway and someone else’s phishing net.

How to pick a giveaway winner goes deeper on the drawing method itself, and the giveaway rules guide turns this campaign’s terms paragraph into eight clauses you can copy.
The Instagram giveaway picker opens with an entrant wheel and visible bonus entries; for a comment section in the thousands, the number wheel draws a comment position instead.
