What is a letter wheel actually used for?

Word games and teaching, mostly. A letter comes up and somebody has to name a country, an animal or a word beginning with it — and the wheel is the part that stops whoever is running the round from picking the easy letters.

It does the smaller alphabet jobs too: which team starts, which row reads first, which of twenty-six prepared tasks is next. Twenty-six equal segments is a fair draw over anything you can index by letter.

What pairs with a letter wheel?

A letter is usually the first half of a game, and the icebreaker wheel carries the questions for the second half. Where the answer is a figure rather than a letter, spin the number wheel; where the options are recognised by sight, use the picture wheel.

About the letter wheel

A to Z, twenty-six segments, all equally likely. That is what a random letter means in every market this tool serves; accented letters and umlauts are not on it because nobody asking for a random letter expects them.

Remove the ones you do not want, or clear the wheel and add exactly the letters you need. The wheel draws from whatever is on it, so a five-vowel wheel behaves like any other.

Switch to elimination mode. Each letter leaves the wheel as it is drawn, which is what makes this work for classroom games and word rounds where a repeat ends the turn.
